04:01 pm - Alaska FTL! Don't get me wrong... it's absolutely gorgeous up here. However, Ketchikan is just a wee bit smaller than I'm used to (I miss Seattle, just not the traffic) and there's rather a shortage of psychiatric staff around. Work's okay enough, I suppose, but... there's a learning curve, to say the least. Not to mention getting used to new people (which I hate), the inherent instability of the first few months, the fact that it's transfer season and most of the people I DO like are gonna be out of here in just a few short months. GAH! It's times like this I wonder if I should have joined the Coast Guard at all and done something with a little more stability! Then again with the economy the way it is I'm better off staying where I am. All this treatment would be bloody expensive for a civilian...
Depakote sucks, Zoloft sucks. I hate missing out on workouts because my stomach is trying to turn inside-out, jump out of my throat and strangle me. But meh... I'll deal somehow. *shrug* That, PTSD over Dad's death (for crying out loud I can't even LOOK at a defibrillator without bursting into tears...) and the doc is also considering a possible Asperger's or HFA diagnosis...
But meh, I'm just talking out my ass here. Signing off.

02:33 am - Been forever, eh? Wow... I haven't posted here since the beginning of NaNo 2006 (which WoW ate the word count for, just like 2005) and not only is NaNo 2007 over, but it's freaking 2008 already. Quick recap of 2007, which sucked big hairy donkey privates: Dad died back in May and I started my Coast Guard schooling for electronics two weeks later, so that was rather... difficult. However, I got through that, graduated just before Christmas and am now an Electronics Technician Third Class and bound for Ketchikan, Alaska. Yay. And things. And in writing-related news, I actually DID win NaNo this year... by writing a WoW fan fiction.
Anyhoo, I'll post some later if I feel like it. Maybe. Current Location: Washington State Current Mood: blah Current Music: Back In Black-- AC/DC

02:33 pm - z0MG! NaNo 2006 approacheth! Awright... since my last NaNo utterly tanked, I figured I'd better write the story that got those characters to where they are now. (Even though it's, like, 200 years earlier. 203 years to be exact.) I'm slowly giving all my characters complete makeovers and trying to come up with a plot that incorporates more than just a Quest to Save the World(TM). I know plagues are pretty overdone, but for my purposes it should work quite adequately. (Not to mentionlotsa poltics, trying to hunt down and kill evil critters, and so forth.)
Oh, and pirates. Because pirates are just awesome. ^_^ Current Location: Rhode Island, to my chagrin. Current Mood: Overcaffeinated Current Music: The theme music from Six Feet Under

06:10 pm - Now for some shameless pimping!
Well, so I finished A Storm of Swords, read some reviews of A Feast for Crows and debated endlessly with myself whether to buy it or not... of course, my impatience to find out what happened next overrode the tepid reviews and I broke down and bought it in hardcover. Buuuut... now I've finished it and now I'm stuck with all the other rabid GRRM fans wanting to know what the hell happens next. Ohhhh, the suspense! It's worse than waiting for the seventh Harry Potter book! (Hey, at least those don't leave their characters with OMG horrible cliffhangers at the end of each book!)
Now, time for the shameless pimping I promised. I love the hell out of the ASoIaF series and it's definitely one of the best reads I've had in a while. Complex political fantasy equals fun. Shamelessly killing off viewpoint characters equals fun. Losing sleep because of staying up to read 'just one more chapter' before having to get up at 5:30 the next morning? Well, not so fun, but you know what I mean. I guess what I really liked was the fact that actions had nasty consequences for both 'good guys' and 'bad guys' (I use the terms loosely because it's all one big gray area, although some characters are more honourable and typically 'heroic' than others-- which, by the way, isn't necessarily a good thing in this rough world!) and the main characters got hit with it just as badly as anyone else. Yes, some would consider it dark and depressing... I call it a hell of a lot more realistic than most of the whitewashed fluff I've read. Characters walking around in bubbles of 'z0MG I'm invulnerable because I'm a main character!!11!11' just beg for an ending of "ROCKS FALL. EVERYONE DIES."
Now, I definitely have some stylistic quibbles... some moments where the narration breaks the fourth wall, and the liberal use of modern swear words. (I know some of them are of rather old derivation, but let's not get into that. *grin*) I didn't find it offensive, but it did detract a little. However, I know some people would, along with the rampant sex and violence. Definitely not for the weak of stomach... but for those who can take the grittiness, it's awesome.
Maybe I'll gush buckets of squishy love over the characters later...

12:26 am - Holy crap. An update! Wow, it's been months and months since I've posted. Since November (during which I majorly crashed and burned due to an excess of World of Warcrack) I've joined the Coast Guard (FINALLY!), gone to boot camp (which was fun in it's own special way), gotten sent 3,000 miles away from home to a buoy tender, and decided that, in spite of being in the military I'm still doing NaNo 2006 and will furthermore attempt to convert some of my shipmates into overcaffeinated novel-writing machines. Not that they need any help becoming yet moreovercaffeinated, of course. Oh, and I turned 20 a few days ago. Joy. And I've also become a rabid fangirl for George R. R. Martin, in large part thanks to limyaael, some people on my WoW server and the good folks at the NaNo boards. Once I'm done with A Storm of Swords I might write a review. Teh joy. 02:21 am - Awriiiight. NaNoWriMo 2005 is officially under way. Le yawnage, I need to go to bed, and I'll be thrilled to get in 2000 words today. Did the Mary Sue litmus test for this year's crowd; test has apparently been recalibrated but they are, for the large part, non-Sues and Stus.
Iartal (22 pts; borderline Stu)-- Spiffy Magic Powers(TM), rather powerful to boot, and fairly well-known for said power. Need I say more? Actually, yes I do. His original score was somewhat higher, but he lost a number of points for some significant personality flaws.
Lucia (25 pts; borderline Sue)-- As I'd about expected, the highest score of the bunch, but she still didn't fare as badly as I thought she would. Perhaps it's the fact that she has even more egregious personality flaws than her brother, not to mention said flaws get her and basically everyone she cares about in metric buttloads of trouble. Okay, so she has some strange abilities even by the standards of the Sk'kirrim and has managed to rise to a highly influential position for her age, but her gaping character flaws and rather unlikeable personality kind of compensate. Hmmm... maybe I should knock off another 20 points for the sheer fact that she irritates the crap out of me and makes me want to kill her. :-P
Tsaien (10 pts; anti-Sue)-- Got some points in the angst department and maybe a couple for being a competent swordswoman. Whoop-de-fricking-doo. Still some personality flaws, yes, but nothing worth taking off points for.
Phaedros (6 pts; anti-Stu)-- Has all the tender sweetness of a seasick crocodile. However, he has a few nifty and useful magic abilities. Way to go, Mr. Grumpypants Druid.
Alarena (10 pts; anti-Sue)-- Still an unknown quantity at this point. Slightly angsty mage, that about covers it.
Daem (10 pts; anti-Stu)-- Quite honestly, I expected this guy to score higher. (Hmmm... ex-assassin historian...) He's great at killing people and writing, and probably at writing about killing people, but otherwise is a pretty plain and straightforward guy. I guess he's Elen with a radically different career path.
Tosan (6 pts; anti-Stu)-- Aussie Guy would have to score him to get a more accurate analysis (same goes for Iartal, actually), but Tosan just isn't the Gary Stu type anyway. Yay 7-ft-tall illiterate rangers with big sticks!
Katerin (11 pts; non-Sue)-- No mage like her sister, but she has other qualities that make up for it. Hey, you'd have to have some sort of mad skills (or just mad guts) to be a spy among Sk'kirrim. A human spy among a mostly Sk'kirrim group, natch. Incredibly curious, probably too much so for her own good. That could cause problems.
Telhoth (19 pts; non-Sue)-- Wow, I expected her score to at least match Lucia's. She would've scored quite a bit higher had she not been utterly stripped of her magic, and yes, there's quite a few personality flaws in there that shaved off some points. Alas, things are not destined to go as she planned... muwahahahaha!
Barieth and Nerin are both unknown quantities at this point, so I'll get to them later. :-D Current Mood: tired-wired-fired Current Music: FF9-- The Dark Messenger

October 20th, 2005
04:31 pm - This Year's Happy Crew, and a Message to my Sponsors Quick Note for everyone: As per NaNo 2004, all of my chapter entries will be Friends Only. So if you want to read my chapters, friend me and I shall friend you back ASAP. Because I'd much rather have comments from other NaNoers than stupid bozos who like to come in and flame random people, ya know?
Sooo... I still need a title for this thing other than Portals of Destruction (which now doesn't fit very well), but most of the characters, at least, are pretty solid. So here's this year's lineup of torture victims... errr, I mean characters! ^^; Also, credit given where credit is due because not all of them are originally of my creation... I have a couple of awesome Aussies to thank. ;-)
And finally, for those wondering what the hell a Sk'kirrim is I'll put up something about them later-- they're some vaguely Elf-like race I made up and they're basically my focus this year.
MMC-- Iartal Arakkan: A prominent and very arrogant Sk'kirrim mage (or Kho as they are known); an otherwise routine investigation turns into a rescue mission when it turns out to be a trap for Lucia. It's hard enough that he's stuck with a bunch of uncooperative people who don't particularly like taking orders from him (though he does have a LOT to learn about leadership), but Lucia being his sister and the mastermind being a former Kho herself... well, that's just asking for trouble of the worst kind. (Here's hoping Aussie Guy won't laugh TOO hard if I get the character wrong. ;-) )
FMC-- Lucia Argenquiris: You've all met her younger incarnation in a previous entry. A Sk'kirrim equivalent to a general and also rumoured to have quasi-prophetic abilities (at least as far as her faction is concerned), her position has... gotten to her head, to say the very least. It is partly her own hubris on this account that gets her captured.
Other Major Characters (The Knights of the Imploding Table, as I facetiously refer to them-- refers to an incident where Iartal got angry and accidentally made a table implode):
Tsaien Mir'savi: A disenchanted ex-follower of Lucia's and frequent source of frustration to Iartal as she often calls his attitude into question. Her sister's death at the hands of Lucia's captors forces Tsaien to try and rediscover her convictions.
Phaedros Dahlmarrin: A half-Sk'kirrim Druid-ish sort with a major attitude problem. (That's fantasy Druid, not the ancient Celtic religion. Ya never know with these things.) Is very lucky Iartal has a modicum of self-control or else he'd end up dead before 10,000 words. (Clash of the Egos! RUN FOR YOUR LIVES!)
Alarena Ellufe: A human mage thrown headlong into this whole mess; reluctantly gets involved because her sister Katerin is doing something very crazy and will probably need to be saved from herself. Not a big fan of Sk'kirrim herself, she is trying to figure out why Katerin is so fascinated with them. (You know who you are, girlie. ;-) )
Daem Savaris: An ex-assassin turned writer, with a major interest in Sk'kirrim history. How he became involved in this is anyone's guess, but whether he likes it or not he'll probably find some use for his old skills. (Once again, girlie, you know who you are-- except I kinda turned him into something completely different from intended! Muwahahah!)
Villainous Types--
'Telhoth' (formerly Teatha Velnirryn): A vengeful exile wishing nothing less than the destruction of the Kho, and the architect behind Lucia's capture. However, her actions have some rather... unintended consequences that could put a serious cramp in her plans. It seems that in spite of lacking the magic she formerly wielded, she has still managed to cause untold trouble. (Originally Aussie Guy's brainchild, she... took off from there. Way to go, lady. :-P )
Barieth: A mage under Telhoth's employ, partly to make up for her own lack of magic. He has some plans of his own in all this... but what the hell IS he, anyway? *must bug Aussie Guy about him...*
Enoch: One of Telhoth's lieutenants and Tsaien's mortal enemy. Oh, yes, and major-league jackass. (And not in the stupid sense of the word, either.)
Other Peeps--
Katerin Ellufe: Alarena's older sister, part-time archaeologist and spy for the Kho. it is because of her information that Iartal is able to trace Lucia's captors back to Telhoth's employment. (Imagie the trouble if she were to get caught, though...)
Lord Nerin Firwing: The leader of the Kho and Iartal's mentor. All I can say is that he does not pull an Obi-Wan Kenobi and die. I don't even know the rest myself, though. ;-) *makes a note to bug Aussie Guy about it along with Barieth* Current Mood: Eeeeevil! Current Music: Apocalyptica

12:34 am - Plot set and locked! w00t! Well. I haven't updated in a while, but I figure with November coming up fast I better. NaNo 2005's all set and decided (silly me, writing the sequel before the prequel!) and it's promising to be a fun ride already. Additionally, can't wait for my NaNo shirt to arrive. ^_^
Anyway... two-sentence bite-sized summary as follows-- and no, this is in no way related to Twilight of the Blind, except for being rather vaguely based off an RPG I started on the same Christian RPG board where TotB took off from.
***A prominent young mage enlists the aid of several companions to rescue his sister-- a prophetic leader-- from an exiled compatriot out for revenge. However, affairs quickly take a turn for the worst as the ex-mage's actions stir up dark undercurrents that others above would just as soon keep hidden, and the lady prophet's disappearance ignites a civil war long in the making.***

09:47 pm - Bleh. 'Tis all I can say right now... this has been one heck of a bad weekend. The general manager at work got canned yesterday because the regional director-ish guy is a total jerkazoid and hates her guts for some irrational reason... and I liked her, too. :( *writes on chalkboard* 'I will NOT entertain thoughts of revenge... I will NOT entertain thoughts of revenge...' The new general manager is kind of a temporary fix (6 months or something, but I'll be well outta there by then) and she seems okay, I guess, but I'm going to reserve judgement until I've worked with her a bit more...
Wow, I really don't like corporate guys. They messed my stepdad over by giving him a ginormous paycut (27% for Alaska Airlines pilots just because they COULD) and now the general manager... I really hope she didn't do something bad to deserve it, like embezzle or something. Somehow I doubt it, 'cause pretty much everyone at work could see that this jerk had it out for her from the get-go, but you never know. Pretty much everyone is mightily ticked off over this, though, and I get the feeling we'll lose a few people over this. Heck... *I* would walk out if I had another job I could go to.
Hopefully I'll find out what really happened... because this is really starting to piss me off...

02:29 am - Arrrrrgh. I just realized where I should be right now... I should be at Legacies, not sitting on my butt at home having just finished the night shift at work. But certain someone who shall remain nameless just had to say 'no, you're not allowed to do that anymore'... feeling kind of sad, really. I should be slogging through a muddy-as-hell Boy Scout camp wearing Elf ears and running away from stuff that's trying to hit me with fake weapons made of foam and duct tape... and chilling out with people wearing fursuits or green face paint or whatever.
Bleh. Oh well. I'm not going to devote the remainder of my energy for tonight whining about that-- pointless angst is kinda stupid if you ask me. Save that for cheesy fanfiction. ;-)

11:56 pm - Stuff. Some people really ARE idiots. Not mentioning any names, but the words 'scam' and 'burned cat' are somewhere involved... anyway, my kudos to the LJer who did the detective work to expose it. Seriously, look into a career in law enforcement. :) I'm not going to waste any more words on that, though, because some people just don't need the attention.
Anyway, other things... not much to comment about, actually. Except being slightly peeved at Mom over various things, my braces come off in 5 weeks, and in some ways I can't wait till I ship off for the Coast Guard. Even though it means I probably will not be participating in NaNoWriMo 2005. Even if I did, I'm not sure what I'd actually write about this time around. Maybe that crop of characters further down... Lucia and them.
That could be an interesting challenge, actually. 'Cause me and my Aussie co-schemer have basically gone and utterly changed the groundwork of that entire universe. (Well, it's more him that did it, but still.) Details to follow eventually?

02:25 am - w00t! NaNo in January! I've put off editing 'Twilight of the Blind' for now... I need a new set of characters to play around with, hehehe. Anyway, my new project is also based off some RPG characters, but as I said, its an entirely different set... I have a title and a very vague idea of a plot (pretty much completely overhauling the RPG it was based off of), and a buttload of characters. So... introducing the main cast of 'Season of Shadow', a few characters at a time!
( Ari Firehawk )
*What a fun character to write... alright, so her name does kinda follow my username *sigh* but that's what comes of being stuck for an RPG character name... it's what the others dubbed me, so it kinda stuck. And now I can't think of her as much of anything else, GRRR. Damn those Mary Sue tests!

Others forthcoming! Hehehe. Current Mood: uber-tired Current Music: Enigma-- Sadeness
